Counter Context’s role on NOMA, Manchester’s 20 acre mixed-use development, is as multi-faceted as the project itself.
NOMA is one of the largest regeneration schemes in the North of England. Positive positioning within the community is crucial to minimising reputational risk that can be associated with such a large-scale development. Our role within the NOMA team is to manage community and stakeholder engagement, ensuring those living and working nearby are informed, engaged and listened to.
Our first commission on NOMA was to engage with the local community about the proposed changes to the Manchester inner ring road in 2010. We applied a sensitive, sincere and robust approach and have since supported the different phases of development within the scheme in the same vein.
Counter Context’s experience in community consultation on tall buildings in urban areas helped our client to successfully navigate the pre-application process for Angel Gardens, the 34 storey PRS development at NOMA.
Recognising that activity at NOMA progresses on a day by day basis, we launched a quarterly e-newsletter to bring members of the local community up to speed. We are also promoting and encouraging use of the new public realm by facilitating engagement with local community groups.
“Engaging honestly and openly with the local communities we serve is a key priority for The Co-Operative Estates. We trust Counter Context to provide us with practical and impartial advice. They have played a valuable role in supporting our work in Manchester, as part of our four million sq ft NOMA development, and have helped us to build relationships with local residents and businesses.”
Ruairidh Jackson, former Strategy and Development Director, The Co-Operative Group.
